Intermountain Gas Reminds Customers What to do if They Suspect a Gas Leak

BOISE, IDAHO – January 9, 2025 – Intermountain Gas Company is aware of recent reports of mysterious odors in and around Meridian and southern Ada County.  Our crews investigate every report of a possible or suspected natural gas leak.  To this point, natural gas has not been found as a cause for the odors in these areas.

In its natural state, natural gas is odorless and colorless.  For easy detection, Intermountain Gas Company adds an odorant called mercaptan into the gas before it is inserted into the pipeline system.  Mercaptan gives off a foul smell similar to rotten eggs or sulfur.

If you smell the odor of mercaptan, or suspect a natural gas leak:

  • If you are inside, evacuate everyone immediately, including pets.
  • Leave the door open behind you as you leave.
  • From a safe location, outside of the building and away from the possible gas leak, call our 24-hour emergency number: 800-548-3679.
  • Call 9-1-1.
  • Keep other people and animals away from the area.
  • Do not use a telephone or cell phone inside the building.
  • Do not flip light switches, pull plugs or use electrical devices. This includes garage door openers, doorbell and any type of vehicle, machinery or equipment.
  • Do not smoke or light matches.

If you are outside:

  • Leave the area immediately. Go to a safe location and call Intermountain Gas Company at 800-548-3679.
  • Call 9-1-1.
  • Do not smoke or light matches in the area.
  • Do not operate machinery or vehicles.
